Thai Massage

Thai Massage (or Traditional Thai Massage) boasts a very ancient history and its origins date back to around 500 BC. The codification of this discipline is linked to the Indian doctor Jivaka Kumar Bhacca, a known friend and traveling companion of the historical Buddha, Siddhārtha Gautama Shakyamuni. The principles and the philosophy behind Thai massage are in fact replete with metaphysics and principles from the Buddhist tradition. Jivaka Kumar Bhacca is a prominent figure in Thai history. Considered as the Father of Medicine, he is a sort of eastern equivalent of our Greek Hippocrates.

Principles of Thai Massage

This form of massage is called nuad phaen borarn in the Thai language, translatable as "touch to heal" - a name that best expresses the ultimate goal of treatment.

The concept on which Thai Massage is based is akin to the principles of Ayurvedic Massage and Shiatsu, in which the human body is crossed by about 70,000 channels (called sen) through which the vital energy, or prana, flows.

According to the tradition linked to this treatment, the various psychophysical disorders are caused by an imbalance or stagnation in the circulation of prana. It is therefore possible, through specific compressions and acupressure, to stimulate its correct circulation and rebalance the structure of the whole body.

Sequence of a Session

Thai massage is practiced on the ground, lying on a firm mattress. Traditionally it does not include the use of oils, however in recent decades there has been a prolific dissemination of schools that promote a less rigid vision of the practice and allow the therapist to use ointments and aromatherapy essences to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment. Thai massage, in addition to pressure, touch and kneading, also involves the use of traction and stretching techniques, carried out by the masseur by holding the wrists and ankles.
